As a Nursing Assistant in the Nursing Service of the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System you will provide escort services for the acutely, seriously, and chronically ill patients with a variety of medical, surgical, and psychiatric.  The incumbent delivers safe and individualized nursing care to patients with multiple and complex needs and performs in such a way as to promote a sense of worth and dignity for the individual. The incumbent should possess basic understanding of the total patient program, understanding of simple scientific facts and principles, a broad spectrum of technical skills, adaptation of procedures to meet individual patient needs, and recognition of the relatedness of patients behavior and physical condition.

Work Schedule:  VARIOUS TO INCLUDE SHIFT ROTATION (DAY, EVENING, & NIGHT SHIFTS), WEEKENDS & HOLIDAYS

Physical Demands:  Work requires the following physical abilities - standing and/or walking 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week with stooping, twisting, and bending without limitations.  Must be able to lift and/or move heavy objects over 45 pounds.  Must be able to carry, push, and pull objects over 40 pounds for distances of at least 200 feet.  Assignment involves positioning patients and transferring them to wheelchairs and gurneys using good body mechanics.  Must be able to work varied shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment:  Verbal/physical outbursts from emotionally disturbed patients and distraught visitors may occur and are usually unpredictable.  The ability to perform tasks that expose the individual to blood, body, fluids, or tissues.  This classification, based on exposure risk, is known as Category I.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement Monday, July 22, 2013.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:  Requires 6 months or more of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-2) OR successful completion of a 1-year or more of education above high school at an accredited college or university with courses relating to the work of the position OR equivalent combinations of successfully completed related post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. A transcript or course listing must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

EDUCATION:  Applicants may substitute 1 year above the high school level at an accredited college or university, with courses directly related to the work of the position, (one academic year of education is 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours).  (UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED ). 

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.  If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position.  (When crediting education, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used). SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Qualifying specialized experience includes non-professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:

  • Provides escort services for acutely, seriously, and chronically ill patients with a variety of medical, surgical, and psychiatric problems.
